Brats
Submitted by Bob Turnage on Oct 27, 2019
Delicious in a hoagie roll or as a stand-alone sausage. Recently fixed for group of 50.
Servings:
Group
Complexity:
Very Easy
Total Time:
45-60 min
Ingredients:
+Johnsonville brand Brats
- original recipe (preferred)
- buy at least 1 brat per dinner guest (typically 45-50)
- bought extra 20 as there were more people signing up
+Chopped (or minced) garlic - 8 oz jar (brand - Spice World)
+Onions - 2-3 large white onions
- slice and dice before cooking
+Beer - case of 24 cans
- Add more beer for more brats
Directions:
Use open flame and cooking pot large enough to hold all ingredients at once.
Add all of above ingredients.
Initially pour at least 16-18 cans of beer into pot.
Add more beer as needed to make it easy to stir while cooking.
Bring the pot to a good boil, then reduce to low boil.
For me, this took 20-25 minutes.
Let simmer for 15-20 minutes.
Stir occasionally.
Turn off the heat and let sit for 15-20 minutes.
Stir occasionally.
Move brats to open grill, preheated.
Cook for 2-3 minutes each side to brown them.
Serve hot and fresh as possible.
Cook's Notes:
1. About 55 people signed up for the 2019 dinner. So I went and purchased a total of 75 brats - about 1.5 brats for everyone. With all the other food dishes served, it was way to many brats. For the future, most of the people only wanted about half of one brat. For future dinners of about 50-55 people, I recommend purchasing about 40 brats total (5 per package). Cook them. Then, take about 20-25 cooked brats and cut them in half. Leave the remainder of the brats whole for the people who want a whole brat. Serve both cut and uncut brats together.
2. I also purchased enough hoagie rolls for each person to have a whole brat in one roll. Most people did not use any rolls at all. For future dinners, I recommend purchasing about 2-3 packages of rolls maximum (6 per package).
