SYNOPSIS (my description):

Many would say this is a science fiction movie - it's not. It's a survival movie. It's the 21st century version of Robinson Crusoe. But, you're NOT on a sinking ship in the middle of an ocean, or on an uninhabited island. You are far, far, far from home.

 

Astronaut Mark Watney has been mistakenly left for dead by his crew mates - on Mars. He has a little food but no one is looking for him. Mark has to rely on himself to find a way to survive (food, water, air) and find a way to tell NASA he is alive. Back on Earth, weeks later NASA accidentally learns Mark is still alive but can't communicate with him. A rescue mission like the world has never seen is started to save him.

 

FYI: a quick search on Google says to takes 150-300 days to travel from Earth to Mars one way using current technology, depending on the two planets position in the Solar System.
